The USDA, ARS, Pacific West Area (PWA) consists of 49 research units at 21 locations in eight states. Together we perform a wide range of innovative research projects aimed at solving the world's agricultural and food challenges and transferring those solutions into use.

In prior roles, in addition to basic research, technology transfer is emphasized by Dr. McHugh's team. Together with commercial partners they have successfully introduced a number of innovative new foods and process technologies into the marketplace. These include 100% JustFruit bars with Gorge Delights, fruit and vegetable wraps with NewGem Foods and vitamin D enhanced mushrooms with Monterey Mushrooms .
